Vedic Q&AAnswered according to Bhaktivedanta Siddhānta
Where does the soul go after leaving the body if one lives in goodness, passion, or ignorance?
✨Vedic Scholar Answer
Verified against Śrīmad Bhagavad-gītā As It Is
The soul’s next destination is determined by the mode of nature in which it departs the body, as explained in Bhagavad-gītā 14.18: “Those situated in the mode of goodness gradually go upward to the higher planets; those in the mode of passion live on the earthly planets; and those in the abominable mode of ignorance go down to the hellish worlds.” Yet this journey is not automatic but depends entirely on what one remembers at the moment of quitting the body, for Krishna declares in BG 8.6, “Whatever state of being one remembers when he quits his body, O son of Kuntī, that state he will attain without fail.” Thus the embodied soul in goodness ascends to celestial realms, the passionate soul remains bound to the earthly plane, and the ignorant soul falls into hellish conditions—all within the perpetual cycle of birth and death under the three modes.
Nevertheless, these destinations, though varied, are all within the material universe and therefore temporary, for the soul is eternal and transcendental to the modes of nature. The ultimate purpose of human life is to transcend goodness, passion, and ignorance altogether by fixing one’s consciousness on the Supreme Lord, as Krishna instructs in BG 9.27: “Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give away, and whatever austerities you perform – do that, O son of Kuntī, as an offering to Me.” By engaging every act of devotion as a sacrifice to the Divine, one frees oneself from the bondage of all three modes, returning to the spiritual world to resume one’s eternal, blissful relationship with the Lord.
